Revelation 3:20
Listen! I stand at the door and knock; if any hear my voice and open the door, I will come into their house and eat with them, and they will eat with me.
Behold; perceive; be aware… I stand at the door and knock…
Jesus is addressing the church here, in fact the church in Laodicea ,as part of a discourse to address the church in its various regions and in its various states today.
We have always assumed He was speaking to the world, or more particularly, sinners. He wasn’t speaking to sinners, but the church and He says something rather startling, that we need to take note of. Have perception – listen!
We as the church need a spiritual awareness of what the Lord is saying and addressing to us and among us. Jesus then says, IF we hear His voice… I have been speaking in Reading about hearing the voice of God in these times. It is not that we haven’t heard and that we haven’t needed to hear, but if ever there was a time we need to be perceptive of the voice of God, it’s today. It could mean the difference between life and death, prosperity and lack and having the Lord’s positioning for our lives or not.
IF… Jesus said.
Its not about how technical we are with hearing, its about having a spiritual hearing ear. Being tuned the Spirit to hear what He says to and about our lives and the church. As we should practice the presence of God, we should practice having a hearing ear.
First, it starts with having the perception, the sensitivity, taking time to be tuned in what the Spirit says to the churches. Then, it takes actually hearing what Jesus is saying. If you hear My voice… I will come in. So, my understanding, then ,is, if Jesus is addressing the church, and you and I are the church, then its possible for us as the church to NOT be perceptive and Not hear His voice and Not open for Him.
If we do, He says, He will come in – His presence will manifest. In Genesis we see that Adam heard the voice of God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.
Genesis 3:8
And they heard the voice of Jehovah God walking in the garden in the cool of the day:
They heard the voice of the Lord walking- they experienced His presence as they heard His voice. When He comes in, You will know the presence of God in your heart and life. If you study out what happened every time God says “I am with you” or “I’ll be with you” in the Bible , incredible things happened, and will still happen today. We need the King of Glory to come in.
He will dine with us.
He then says He will dine with us and we with Him. What an amazing privilege. To dine with and have the King of kings dine with us. In our hearts. That means, not only will we have intimate fellowship with Him, but we will also experience His abundance. We are talking about the King setting His table in our lives. We will commune with Jesus as King and He will commune with us at His kingly banqueting table .
Psa 23:5
You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim.
When we don’t open.
What a sad thing it is, when the church, when you and I, are not opening the door of our lives, not inviting and giving the King place on the throne of our lives so that He can come in and Set up His royalty and all that goes with it, in our lives. The reason: because we don’t hear His voice. He says IF… you hear. There is the firm possibilty that we don’t hear. Can you see the necessity of becomng spiritually perceptive and hearing what He says? You may say: “Its not that serious. I don’t want to feel condemnation. Don’t make it sound so harsh.”. But this is not harsh, its just reality. If we “tuned in” and listened and heard we would open and we would experience what we need in these last days.
When we can say He is speaking to someone else, then it takes all the responsibility off us and I don’t have to pay attention to what Jesus is saying here and it doesn’t really apply to me, but when I discover and recognise He is in fact, speaking to me and to us as the church, we have to pay careful attention to heed and obey and adapt to to His Voice.
Can you hear Him speaking, even right now to you in this scripture of Revelation?
If you hear My voice…
